My Life Story

My Life Storyby Craig Wiblin Mischief on Monday, 26 July 2010 at 13:48
How do you end ?

Hi everyone, my name is Craig and i was born and bred in Port Elizabeth.

21 years ago, i lost my absolute best friend and hero, the person i really looked up to. That was my Dad, who passed away from brain cancer. He was a pharmaceutical rep all his life, and a damn good one at that, and won rep of the year about 8yrs in a row. He was diagnosed with brain cancer, and about 6 months later he was gone !!

i will never forget though, that he was a highly intelligent and funny man, he had the most wicked sense of humor.

to the extent, that a few hours before he passed, regardless of the excruciating pain that he was in, he smiled and said, “Boy, my whole life i drank and smoked too much, and the only thing i never used went vrot” that was his sense of humor.

My entire world fell apart when he passed away, and i had to make a choice in my life.

Do i lie around feeling sorry for myself ?

What would this great man want and expect from me ?

He would have probably said something along the lines of “Go out there and grab what you want with both hands, your life is what You make of it, Life is for the living”

So that is what i decided to do, with the hope that somehow, he would be able to see and be proud of his youngest son and his buddy.

I had a passion since the age of about 10yrs old of becoming a professional entertainer, but in those days it was a horribly underpaid and dodgy career to get into.

I worked in various sectors, but deep in my heart, my dream was to be a professional entertainer.

I moved to Johannesburg, and started off presenting a karaoke Comedy show, as karaoke was huge in those days, and myself and my stage partner become an overnight sensation, and performed all over the country, being the only comedy karaoke act in the country.

Next thing, karaoke died a sudden death and my world once again fell apart, there was no work, and that meant no income !!

What was i to do ?

I once again thought of what my Dad would want for me, and immediately pulled in a Multi Instrumentalist, and Comedy band “White Mischief” was born.

this now turned into an absolute monster, and we again toured the country performing our zany comedy and music routine.

however, as happens with most good bands, the in band politics and disagreements started, and we eventually decided in 1996 to disband White Mischief.

Once again, another dream had been shattered and what was i to do ?

No work = no money !!

I thought well, i was the front man of the extremely successfull White Mischief, so live your original and ultimate dream and GO SOLO !!

Problem was that i did not play any instruments other than brass, and its a tad difficult to blow a trumpet and sing at the same time.

My older brother used to be a guitarist in a band years before, so he said that the guitar was the way to go and that the basics were very easy to grasp.

I went to my local music store, and asked the sales chap about guitars, and he showed me what he thought would be suitable for my purpose.

He had to play it for me to hear the tone as i had no clue how to play the guitar,

that was the Wednesday morning.

I went straight to my brother who showed me the absolute basic chords, and i went home and practised those chords 24/7

On the Friday i played the guitar live on stage, that was 48hrs later, and although i played it really badly, i believed in myself, and Craig Mischief was born.

I saw a brilliant talk by a guy with no arms and no legs, and his whole message is “Do you finish strong ?”

That is so true in everyday life.

If you try something new, or if you are trying to climb the ladder in your chosen field, and you get knocked down.

Don’t lay there and hope that someone else will pick You up !!

get up and try again.

Imagine if i had of given up when karaoke lost popularity all those years ago ?

Where would i be today ?

Getting started is generally the easy part, in the middle you have the trying times, but how you finish is the most important.

If i get knocked down to the bottom of my ladder again tomorrow, i will dust myself off, and start that long climb all over again.

It doesn’t matter what field you are in, it applies to all.

One quote that my Dad used to always use was, “Craig, rather be a brilliant street sweeper than a bad doctor” and i have never ever forgotten those words.

One of my sisters had a warehousing and distribution company, and she had the big house with a pool and 4 vehicles, private and for the business.

Everything was going great, and she carried a few small lines, and then a Huge consignment of stock for a long standing well established company.

The company was something like 30yrs old, they were secure, and life was good.

One morning she was told to her horror that the long established company had gone belly up !!

Within 24hrs, her entire world fell apart, as this client generated the majority of her income.

What was she to do ?

She dusted herself of, pulled her shoulders back, and started climbing that ladder from scratch.

Today she is involved in one of the biggest bottled water and energy drink manufacturers in the eastern cape.

We are living in extremely tough times, and we need to be stronger now than ever.

Spending ones time wisely is also vital for success.

Do not surround yourself with negativity, and especially not negative people, as they are sure to pull you down with them.

I used to spend every minute that i could, sitting in my home office, in front of my laptop, marketing myself in every way that i could think of.

However, what i was forgetting, was that due to this fact i was neglecting my wife and my daughter, as my whole world revolved around that “Big Break” and i would stop at nothing.

I soon realised though that one can push as hard as one wants, but if you are pushing in the wrong direction, you are wasting your time and the time you could have spent with your loved ones.

I spent a fortune on Internet adverts advertising my product, and saw a huge increase in traffic through my website, but very few resulted in Bookings.

So one of two things was happening.

I was either advertising in the wrong place, or my website didn’t have the impact that i originally thought, and was probably not interesting enough.

I did a complete website makeover, added interesting and amusing content and started from scratch.

What a difference.

Time Management is of the utmost importance when one is trying to move forwards.

There is a time to work on your dream and your goals, but you also have to make time for those that are important and dear to you.

We all forget that as much as we crave success, those closest to you just crave You, and that is an area never to be neglected, as they are you pillar of strength when times are tough, don’t push them aside, because You are going to need them for the duration of your journey.

Once again, this is the same in every field.

Why would someone want to do business with you, and spend their hard earned cash if you cannot convince them that they need your product or yourself ?

ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN !!

If you see that you are getting no closer to your goals, whether it be becoming a manager or whether it be getting your own company to achieve great things, or whatever your goals may be, then sit and analyze your game plan, as you are probably doing something very wrong, and it is probably a small oversight that can be easily rectified.

The smallest changes can drastically change the outcome, and change the way that you end your climb, whatever that climb may be.

Another very important factor, is not to live beyond ones means.

I have a neighbour that drives a beautiful new Mercedes Benz, i on the other hand drive a 1400 Hyundai Getz.

I often stare at his car, and think how great it would be to own such a fantastic car.

The difference, is he is constantly crying about the upkeep on this vehicle, and the fact that due to the economic situation, he missed his last service, and is a month in arrears with his instalment.

My Getz on the other hand, gets me to exactly where i want to go, is up to date on its payments, and has a full tank of petrol because it gets 14km to the liter !!

If we spent less time worrying about what other people seem to have achieved, and more time on our own goals, we would see how much sooner we get up that never ending ladder, and how much more positive the end result would be.

Human nature does not allow us to block out the fact that we may be envious of other people and or their achievement.

But how do You think that they got there ?

Yes, there are the minority that inherit wealth, but the average Joe, got the right recipe and went for it, and probably failed many times before achieving that success that we all want so badly.

I know that i have probably failed at many more things than what i have succeeded at, but that is just a fact of life.

You have a choice, do You hang your head and give up, or do You get up and say “OK that didn’t work out too well, lets start again from a different angle, bring it on”

Every single time that you fail, and there will probably be many, analyze the situation, and think to yourself “What did i do wrong ?? What can i learn from this failure”

Thomas Edison.............if you hear the name, immediately you think of the light bulb, but were you aware of the fact that he had 1093 patents in the USA ?

Most of his patents never resulted in anything great, but he persevered, and never ever gave up and hung his head.

He learnt from his downfalls and moved forward with the knowledge and experience he had derived from his failures along the way.

Can you imagine life as we know it if he had given up and not pushed forward ?

We would have all still been burning candles.

Then again, pity he didn’t have a theory about Eskom !!

It is absolutely amazing what one can achieve, if one is positive and has self belief.

If You don’t believe in yourself, why should i or anyone else for that matter believe in you ??

Don’t sit back, throw your hands in the air and mope because you have failed, or had a hiccup in achieving your personal greatness.

NO-ONE is going to do it for you, and quite frankly NO-ONE is going to care if You give up, except those closest to you, your family, the ones you are supposed to provide for and protect.

Get up, learn from your mistakes and short comings and start that long climb all over again.

I’ll say it again, NO-ONE is going to do it for You.

Another example that always makes me laugh, is when i was watching a dvd of the life story of rock Supergroup QUEEN.

They were interviewing one of the ex roadies, a scruffy looking chap by the name of RAT.

The interviewer asked him, “Why did you decide to leave the group ?”

And his answer was, “I looked at them and thought, What A Bunch Of Tossers, they will Never make it..............Jeez was i wrong”

That was probably the biggest mistake and the most expensive, that he ever made in his life.

Those guys had a dream, they never took notice of the negativity, and they pushed forward like there was no tomorrow, with massive self believe.

The result, they became one of the most successful rock bands in history, and definitely had a brilliant end result.

They knew what they wanted, had massive self belief, and achieved what everyone at the time thought impossible.

That is the difference between dreaming and doing.

We all dream of greatness and success in our personal lives, but what are You going to do about it ?

Is it going to remain a dream that You bring up over and over around the campfire, or are you going to get a game plan together and fight for that end result ?

Walt Disney once said “If You can dream it, You can do it.”

And he started off with a talking mouse.

I was talking to a close and very wealthy friend once, and was telling him of another dream that i have, and that is to own my own entertainment venue.

My dream as i put it to him, is to have a small venue with a small stage in the corner, and if it is a busy night, i will get on my own stage and perform, and if it is a quiet night, i will tend my own bar.

He looked at me and asked, “Why would you want a small venue with a small stage ?? That way you will remain small.”

He went on to say, “Why not go huge, have a massive venue with a massive stage with all the sound and lighting that can fit on it, and if it fails, so what, you tried your best, BUT if it succeeds, think how you will reap the rewards.”

In other words he was saying, if you dream small you will achieve small, but if you truly believe you can conquer anything then why not go for it. If you don’t believe that, then why try do it in the first place. Today this man through his massive self belief and going BIG in every way is a self made Billionaire.

So in ending,

dont let others discourage You.

believe in yourself, grab onto you dreams and goals with both hands and dont let go......GO FOR IT !!

You have but One certainty in life, "You are definately going to Die"

What you make of the Journey towards it, is entirely up to You.

"Fear is temporary, but regret is forever"

Never have regrets !!
